Thursday, August 9th, 7-8 p.m.: “Organic Frederick” documentary showing
Large meeting room in the Mt. Airy Public Library

We had over 30 people who came out to the showing! Two Common Market reps were there, who brought local cheese goodies for everyone to sample (see picture below). After the show, we rearranged all the chairs into a large circle and had an impassioned discussion about local/organic food. Everyone present brought a lot to the conversation.

We talked about school system food and its problems as well as attempts at changing it, the "corporate" aspect of organics and how organic is inherently tied to the local, the true cost of "cheap" industrialized food, problems with petroleum/ petrochemicals especially in light of Peak Oil, the need for grassroots action in the face of powerful corporate forces that are consolidating agriculture and getting federal subsidies to do so, the fact that so few of us are farmers that it is no longer an occupation listed on the census, and so on.

It was great to see the connections that we made in bringing the group together and community that was created. It's unique to create a space and see what people bring to it and create together.
